Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks
Two weeks ago I went up for the University of Oregon’s first ever TEDx conference — sponsored by the School of Journalism (woot!). Besides the conference being totally inspiring, I also got to listen to one of my favorite radio stations 94/7fm (or KNRK back in the olden days). I love 94.7 because, though they call themselves an “alternative station,” they do not play the textbook alternative music. Traveling to other cities and listening to their “alternative” music, you hear Nickleback and Green Day. However, in Portland, you get to hear good music.
While I was driving the 205 that Saturday night, an amazingly catching song came on the radio. Sadly, I missed the title of the song and when I texted in to get the last three songs played (ingenious invention btw) I was a little too late.
Singing the song in my head for days after the weekend, I was sure that I would never find the song I loved so much. However, luck was on my side. Just this last week a friend of mine said “Hey. Have you heard of Foster the People?”
Phoenix - Lisztomania (Alex Metric Remix)
It’s Friday night. It’s party time.
We all need new jamz (that’s right, with a z) when the music starts to get bumpin on the weekend, because the classic Lady Gaga and Ke$ha sometimes can’t cut it. Especially when one is kicking off her Get $leazy Tour… (Is anyone else questioning the moral validity of this tour’s title?)
Well here’s a high quality, beat bumping, electrobastic* jam that will make even the hipsters want to dance. Phoenix’s Lisztomania has been remixed and revitalized by Alex Metric. Check it out an get your party started already.

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
Fleet Foxes fans have waited for the release of new material forever! Finally, Fleet Foxes delivers a beauty. Helplessness Blues not only has that warm adventurous tone that Fleet Foxes always bring to the table, but there is also this essence of Simon & Garfunkel. The drawn-out vocal harmonies, the slight giddy-up in the guitar rhythm, and even some of the lyrics. This allusion really is in full view during the chorus.
But I don’t, I don’t know what that will be
I’ll get back to you someday soon you will see
I wonder if this is a new inspiration for Fleet Foxes. Are Fleet Foxes the new music from America? What’s a better band to emote Americana than Simon & Garfunkel? Seriously, next time you go on a road trip across the U.S. listen to Simon & Garfunkel. It fits.
Check out the track. You can download it for FREE.
Kings of Leon - Fans
I’ve slowly become a fan of this song (I couldn’t help but use fan in this sentence). This song just seems to bounce on every beat - almost like the music tries to jump at you but then falls back. It’s definitely music to put a spring in your step.
